Starring: Liam Neeson & Diane Kruger Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra By Lloyd Carroll Two years ago Liam Neeson played Bryan Mills, retired spy who has to make a hasty and violent visit to Paris in order to rescue his daughter who has been forced into an international sex ring, in the hit film “Taken. ” Neeson is back on “the continent;” this time in Berlin, in the new suspense flick, “Unknown. ” The crux of the film is the question “What would you do if you were in a foreign country without a passport and someone assumed your identity?” Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson) is a botanist who is attending a biotechnology conference with his wife, Liz (January Jones). Upon arriving at Berlin’s five-star Hotel Adlon, Martin discovers that his attache case containing his passport and other papers was inadvertently left at the airport. While Liz is waiting to check into the Adlon, Martin hails a cab back to the airport to try to retrieve his briefcase without telling her. As fate would have it, his taxi careens into a river trying to dodge a head-on collision, and Martin is knocked unconscious. He would have been killed had it not been for the brave actions of the cab driver, Gina (Diane Kruger). The Bosnian-born female viagra response Gina is in Germany illegally and quickly makes an exit as Martin is being placed in an ambulance. After being in a coma for four days, Martin awakens in a hospital and is able to recall a few things but his memory is sketchy. He does remember that his wife is at the hotel and is probably worried sick about his whereabouts. Against the wishes of the hospital physician, Martin checks himself out and rushes back to the Adlon. When he arrives he is shocked to discover that his wife doesn’t know he is and that another person (Aidan Quinn) is passing himself off as Dr. Harris. For the first 90 minutes, “Unknown” is as taut an edge-of-your-seat thriller as you will ever see thanks to some terrific acting. Liam Neeson, as his wont, is superb playing a character who can overcome any obstacle. Despite approaching 60 years of age, Neeson is one of the best at portraying action heroes. Liam Neeson also benefits from a top-notch supporting cast. Diane Kruger, who was arguably the breakout star of 2009's “Inglorious Basterds female viagra response, ” is clearly ready to be an A-list film star. Female viagra response veteran actor frank langella shows up for a few minutes as harris’s old colleague who knows more about martin than martin knows about himself. As is frequently the case, you wish that Langella had more screen time. Swiss actor Bruno Ganz steals this movie as Ernst Jurgen, a former East German intelligence officer (he admits that he was a member of the Stasi without apologies) who Martin turns to in desperation in the hopes of finding out what is really happening to him and why. The notable exception to the stellar acting troupe is the wooden January Jones who has parlayed her role on the cable cult favorite “Mad Men” into an awful hosting gig a year ago on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” and is now unfortunately getting major film roles. While the first three-quarters of “Unknown” will have your heart racing, the last quarter nearly ruins everything as every plot loose end gets answered in a way that strains credibility even among the most gullible of viewers. The film’s director is Jaume Collet-Serra who has a thin resume. It appears that the real director here is producer Joel Silver who was involved with both the “Die Hard” and “Lethal Weapon” franchises. In the final scenes, we get explosions, car chases, and of course, [female viagra response] car crashes in a pathetic attempt to make us forget that the writers couldn’t come up with a more plausible ending. “Unknown” wastes both fine talent and a great premise.
