Median Wasl doesn’t exist on any map of Iraq, but for a battalion of Army soldiers it’s the closest thing they’ll get. This simulated Iraqi village in California’s Mojave desert provides a crucial training ground for soldiers before they’re deployed to Iraq. Blurring the line between reality and fantasy, the comic and the tragic, this documentary follows the soldiers as they try to battle the insurgency and maintain order among the village’s inhabitants. With actors made of Iraqi exiles, and a stage-managed battle plan, the surreal film asks provocative questions about the U.S. war effort.
